Settlements and negotiation

Most disputes end in a settlement agreement. I make sure the terms, the reference and the payment are right, and push back when they are not.

Two people shaking hands over a signed agreement

A settlement agreement ends a dispute for good, so every clause deserves a careful read. I advise employees who have been offered one and negotiate with the other side when the terms are not right.

What I help with

  • Reviewing and signing off settlement agreements
  • Negotiating the payment and the leaving date
  • Agreed references and how your departure is announced
  • Confidentiality and restrictions after you leave
  • How each payment is treated for tax

How it works

For the agreement to be binding, you need advice from an independent lawyer, and employers often contribute to that cost. I explain what the agreement means for you, tell you whether the offer is fair and, if it is not, negotiate on your behalf.

Before you sign

Do not sign anything until you have had advice. Once the agreement is signed, the claims it covers are usually settled for good.
